Our Story
A Working Ranch. A Living Tradition.
Horse and Herefords has been part of the Northern California landscape for over two decades — a real cattle ranch that opens its gates to riders who want to experience the land the way it was meant to be seen.

Horses in Our String
How It Started
The ranch was founded in 2004 by the Callahan family, who had worked this stretch of Northern California hill country for three generations. What began as a working cattle operation slowly grew into something more — neighbors asking to ride along, visitors stopping at the gate, word spreading that this was a place worth knowing.
The trail ride program started with two horses and a hand-drawn map. Today we run a string of fifteen horses, six established trails, and a reputation built entirely on the quality of the experience. Nothing has been manufactured. The land is real, the horses are real, and the rides are guided by people who grew up on this property.
How We Operate
The Horses Come First
Every horse in our string is chosen for temperament, trail sense, and soundness. They are worked lightly, rested often, and treated as partners — not equipment.
We Ride Real Land
Our trails cross private ranch land that most people will never see from a road. No theme park loops — just open country, honest terrain, and sky in every direction.
Guides Who Know the Ground
Our guides grew up on or near this ranch. They know the history of the land, the names of the oaks, and which ridge catches the best light at sunset.
Safety Without Compromise
Every ride begins with a thorough briefing. Helmets are provided. Group sizes are kept small. We have never had a serious injury, and we intend to keep it that way.
Meet the String
Our fifteen horses range from steady beginner mounts to spirited trail horses for experienced riders. Each one has a name, a personality, and a job they're good at. When you book a ride, we match you to the right horse — not just the nearest available one.
We do not use horses that are too young, too green, or too tired. Our string turns over slowly and deliberately. Several of our horses have been with us for over a decade.
Come See It for Yourself
The best way to understand what we do is to ride with us. Book a trail, call with questions, or just show up and say hello.
